A former Mayoral candidate is accusing Mayor Jim Watson of missing an opportunity to further reduce property taxes in the 2011 budget.

Mike Maguire says the draft budget should have done more to relieve taxpayers' burden and/or reduce the City of Ottawa's debt load.

Maguire, who is now a finance critic for the Ottawa Taxpayers Advocacy Group, says the Mayor should be using $22 million uploaded from the Ontario Government to offer tax relief or reduce the City's debt.

Maguire says the 2.45 per cent property tax increase is "meaningless" without acknowledging that substantial borrowing by the City will increase taxes down the road
