A municipal watchdog is accusing Mayor Jim Watson of using the cover of the Juno Awards to distract taxpayers from a new contract for OC Transpo drivers.

The Ottawa Taxpayer Advocacy Group calls the new four year contract with an 8 per cent pay raise "bad news" for taxpayers.

President Kevin MacDonald says the announcement of the deal was timed with the Junos to give the Mayor "the politics of distraction", adding taxpayers won't look at the numbers while the biggest stars in Canadian music were in town.

The Amalgamated Transit Union will vote next Tuesday on the proposed deal with OC Transpo.
